The ANZCCJ served up the best of ‘down-under’ hospitality last night (30 June 2016) hosting the entire NSW Waratahs team at the Australian Embassy Tokyo. The first part of the event was a Street Rugby ‘Green Carpet’ media event featuring a Rugby demonstration between six Japanese children and three NSW Waratahs players – Bernard Foley, Angus Taaveo, and Rob Horne. Following the Green Carpet was a welcome reception for the team, hosted by ANZCCJ Chair Melanie Brock.
Speeches were delivered by distinguished guests including Australian Chargé d'Affaires, Ms Clare Walsh; ANZCCJ Platinum Sponsor and event sponsor Macquarie Group’s Asia CEO, Mr Ben Way; and Minato City Mayor, Mr Masaaki Tamei. A key theme of the speeches was the increasing inclusivity and diversity of rugby as well as the potential economic opportunities to be gained from a closer relationship between our nations through sport.
It was an exciting night, with the NSW Waratahs players graciously posing for many photos with guests and giving out autographs. At the end of the event, each guest received an official NSW Waratahs cap made especially for this visit.
ANZCCJ Chair, Melanie Brock, said: “We thank the NSW Waratahs for this rare opportunity that was granted to our members. We are also grateful to the event’s main sponsor, Macquarie Group. We look forward to what will be an incredible clash against the Sunwolves on Saturday!”.
