Australia Unlimited: The Nations New Brand
Published:  07 July 2010

The Brand Australia program is about providing an overarching, strategic approach to positioning Australia in the global marketplace.

Brand Australia will use the country’s many achievements to position Australia as a unique, strong, fair and future-focused nation.

Brand Australia is a four-year, $20 million program to sell Australia to the world.  The Australian Government program aims to broaden perceptions of Australia in the international marketplace so it is regarded as highly as a global citizen and business partner, as it is a world class destination.

Brand Australia is being developed and implemented by the Australian Trade Commission (Austrade). The starting point for Austrade has been to measure Australia’s existing reputation and use this knowledge as a basis for taking steps to improve it. This research has helped inform the development of the creative concept, which will drive the program.
After an extensive tender process, M&C Saatchi (also responsible for the highly successful New Zealand “100% Pure” brand) was selected to develop the Australia Unlimited concept.

According to the Brand Australia website, “The logo is a representation of Australia symbolising our growth and expansion. It embraces the best of who we are and speaks to the future-focused nature of our endeavours and our outward looking approach to global affairs. Many people look at it and see an outline of Australia. Some see arrows. Others will see a variety of symbols. It is the inherent simplicity of the logo that allows people to create their own perspective on Australia. The interpretations are unlimited”.

Now the visual identity has been launched, the next step is to develop the brand architecture and encourage Australian government organisations and businesses to co-brand their products. The creative agency will also be required to develop and implement digital and direct marketing activities to encourage the Australian diaspora and Australian exporter community to become involved in the Brand Australia program.

Brand Australia has its own website outlining the background to the program www.brandaustralia.gov.au/Home/About/FAQ.aspx.  Also available on the Austrade website is a short video that introduces Brand Australia - www.austrade.gov.au/default.aspx?ArticleID=12584.
