With under two weeks to go until Glasgow hosts the 26th UN Climate Change Conference of the parties (COP26), the fight against climate change continues apace.

Next month’s conference has been called our “last hope” to reverse the climate crisis. COP26 President Alok Sharma has asked governments around the world to set ambitious near-term emission reduction targets that show the path to net-zero by 2050, and to come forward with plans to adapt to the changing climate. It is generally acknowledged that mobilising private and public finance will be incredibly important for reaching these targets.

Wai-Shin Chan, Head of HSBC’s Climate Change Centre of Excellence and Head of ESG Research, describes our situation at hand as being “two sides of the climate coin”; namely, mitigation vs. adaptation. Mitigation action, aimed at tackling the causes of climate change and minimising the potential impacts, is essential for the prevention of climate change. However, the science indicates that some changes are already irreversible, meaning that the adaptation of countries and economies to cope with those changes is also of vital importance.

So where are we now, and where do we go from here?

On October 28, BCCJ Responsible Business taskforce member Heather McLeish will sit down with Wai-Shin Chan to discuss the upcoming global climate summit. Wai-Shin will provide an overview of the priorities, goals and importance of COP26 and offer views on some of the key issues businesses should be keeping an eye on.

What would a successful outcome look like? What are some practical outcomes we might see from COP26 that would help businesses and investors make longer-term plans with more confidence? And with a focus on the need for adaptation as well as mitigation, how do we find a middle ground to push the agenda forward with the situations and needs differing so much across countries, communities and businesses?

There’s so much to be discussed. Join us for what promises to be an insightful and information-packed 45 minutes in the lead up to the most important Climate Change Conference to date (November 1-12).
