What a busy month it has been! Our third SME Support Program event held on 17 May was a big success. Over 40 Japanese SMEs were in attendance at this event which was co-hosted with the Japan External Trade Organisation (JETRO) and the Tokyo Chamber of Commerce and Industry (TCCI).  Participants learned more about how to do business with New Zealand thanks to our inspirational speakers. The next event in the series will be on 9 August – save the date in your calendars now!

The Food, Agriculture and Hospitality Committee, in conjunction with the Australian Embassy, Club Australia, Street Rugby Alliance, and ANZ Bank, conducted a very successful volunteer weekend in Minamisanriku.  It was our largest group of volunteers to date and I would like to thank everyone who attended and supported.  The weather was terrific as was the Street Rugby session with local children. Some of our team enjoyed a BBQ with beautiful locally caught seafood followed by a session of storytelling by a Tohoku earthquake survivor. Later in the afternoon, bottle brush trees were planted in front of Koala House before the group went on a cruise of the Shizugawa Bay.  Sunday saw us all pitch in to help at the local Fukkou-ichi Recovery Market by preparing and selling bentos with Australian steak burgers, Australian and New Zealand wine and other items. In the end, we raised 179,900 yen for the recovery. A detailed report will follow in next month’s newsletter.

The upcoming months will be equally busy with our AGM scheduled for July. On 20 June, we will be holding an information session for all those who might be looking to becoming more involved in the Chamber. And on 30 June, we will be hosting the NSW Waratahs Super Rugby Team at a welcome reception at the Australian Embassy ahead of their match against the Sunwolves. With a stellar line-up of guests from the Waratahs, as well as prominent figures from the Japanese sports and government circles, this event is one not to be missed! Watch our website for details!!
