Message from the Chair

Dear Members and Friends,
Happy New Year and welcome to the first Monthly
Newsletter of 2021. I hope you all enjoyed a safe holiday period
and feel ready and refreshed for the year ahead.
For us here in Japan, 2021 has been off to a
mixed start. Promising news of an imminent vaccine rollout has
certainly allowed us to see the light at the end of the Covid-19
tunnel, but the introduction of a new State of Emergency in the
early days of the new year is having an impact on many businesses.
Our hospitality members have been particularly affected by the
government’s request to reduce operating hours, as well as the
temporary suspension of the Go To Travel and Go To Eat campaigns.
As it is predicted that this State of Emergency will be extended
through to early March we encourage members to continue following
government guidelines to protect their safety, while finding ways
to remain connected with those around them. Please know that ANZCCJ
remains committed to supporting our members through this
challenging time, and we always welcome requests for assistance.
This year’s online event program commenced with
a webinar hosted by Global Sky Education and Toppan Printing; a
very high-tech production featuring a virtual tour of a
160-year-old Ukiyo-e studio.
Through this event we learned the history of the woodblock print
artform, including many elements that can be applied to today’s
business world – particularly the resilience, respect for
mindfulness and longevity displayed by those who practice this
craft. It has been wonderful to see familiar faces online through
these events, and we are excited to continue our TIER Committee
Launch Series with a virtual panel discussion on New Zealand green
technology in early February.
With the gradual approval of a number of
successful vaccine candidates, Australia, New Zealand and Japan are
beginning to announce the details and timing of their rollout
plans. Both Australia and Japan are currently planning to commence
vaccination of front-line healthcare workers and elderly from
late-February, while New Zealand is projected to commence
vaccinations for the general public in the second half of 2021.
Although New Zealand’s successful pandemic response has been well recognised
over the past 12 months, this week we were proud to see it ranked
best in the world on the Lowy Institute’s COVID-19 Performance
Index.
We were saddened to cancel our plans for this
year’s Shinnenkai, but look forward to meeting you all face-to-face
in the coming months. Thank you for your continued contribution to
our Chamber community.

Latest Economic Update from the New Zealand Embassy
|
The New Zealand Embassy provided the latest
economy update on Japan earlier this month, highlighting topics
such as Japan's second state of emergency, its economic
implications, Prime Minister Suga's NZ$1 trillion stimulus package
and more.
As of 13 January, Japan's daily rate of
confirmed COVID19 cases reached 50 per million people, yet is still
low by international standards compared to the world's worst
affected countries - whom are in the 750-1250 range.
According to the report, the third wave of
infections and the second state of emergency will slow the economy
further, threatening the 3.6% boost to Japan's real GDP predicted
to flow from Suga's NZ $1 trillion stimulus package.
Mitsubishi UFJ Research senior economist
Shinichiro Kobayashi predicted that Japan's GDP could shrink by
double digits in the first quarter of 2021, resulting in an
increase of unemployment rate, and depress consumption.

Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and
Trade: Japan Market Insights
|
According to Australian DFAT's latest Market
Insights report on Japan, the country is recovering from a
recession that started before the COVID-19 pandemic and was
deepened by it. The conditions are steadily improving, albeit with
considerable unevenness across the economy. Potential risks remain
in both the global economy and domestically through potential new
waves of the infection, and may take several years for many sectors
to return to pre-COVID levels of activity.
In 2019, Japan was Australia's second largest
two-way trading partner. Despite the pressure from COVID-19 and
other business competitors, Japan remains a strong market for
Australian businesses - including LNG, coal, iron ore, beef,
copper, sugar, diary products, grains, and medical instruments.
COVID-19 heavily impacted the Japanese food service sector,
presenting challenges for Australian food and wine exports, which
are often consumed at high-end restaurants and bars.
In addition to consumption, employment and
investment patterns are changing due to the pandemic. Labour
shortages have eased across sectors, but unemployment remains low.

Celebrating Women in Japan
|
|
After a year-long campaign, ANZCCJ partnered
with Celebrating Women in Japan (an initiative founded by our Chair
Emeritus, Melanie Brock) to continue profiling different women
within the Chamber who have gone above and beyond to build the relationship
between Australia, New Zealand and Japan. Today, we celebrate Yayoi Ashikaga, Managing Partner at AOM Visa Consulting.
|
|
In the early years of Yayoi’s life, she spent a
few years living in the U.S, where she aspired to establish her
career globally.
Yayoi has over 20 years of experience in the
immigration service industry, including practical experience as a
Senior Visa Officer in the Department of Home Affairs of the
Australian Embassy, Tokyo. During her 9 years working at the
Embassy, Yayoi was responsible for many kinds of cases for a wide
range of nationalities including Tourist, Student, Working
Holiday, Temporary Resident, Work and Migration. In addition to
her time at the Australian Embassy, Yayoi also worked in New
Zealand, and as a result has built a solid network throughout the
Oceania Region.
After leaving the Embassy, Yayoi joined the Lehman
Brothers and gained skills in Global Mobility management and
Human Resources. She never thought she could start her own
business, but her unique experience at L.B. changed her life. AOM
Visa Consulting was established in 2010 with a focus on the Oceania region of
Australia & New Zealand and soon expanded their service to
the USA, Italy, UK and Japan.
Immigration business brought Yayoi opportunities
to meet people and establish business relationship globally. Now
she is the only Japanese member of the Investment Migration
Council (IMC) and Invest in the USA (IIUSA).
In Yayoi's words, “I think Australia provides one
of the most advanced and strategic immigration policies in the
world and I believe that the Japanese government can learn for
future population strategy, especially to attract more young
people and revitalise Japan’s regional economy. My future vision
is to leverage my expertise and contribute to Japanese
immigration policies.”
When
asked about what advice she’d give to women in Japan, Yayoi
responded:
Living in a traditional
Japanese society, there are lots of challenges and it may take
some time to change, though, I think you should just believe in
yourself and then take action, and talk openly to colleagues and
senior people.
Yayoi's thoughts
on what Japanese companies or the Japanese government could do to
empower women in Japan are:
In order to make realistic
outcomes, it's better to set specific goals by companies and the
Japanese government (i.e. number of senior executives, by when,
etc.) and encourage women by offering the opportunity - that is
how they can start the first step.
Connect
with Yayoi through LinkedIn.
