It has been another whirlwind month with a number of seminars and business events, a change in the ANZCCJ leadership team, and the ongoing preparations for our biggest social event of the year – the Gourmet Food and Wine Garden Party!

Following the announcement of my stepping down from the Chair position after six years, I am pleased to announce that the Executive Council has elected Andrew Gauci, Managing Director & CEO of Lendlease Japan, to succeed as Chair of the ANZCCJ. Edward Cole, Managing Partner at Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer, has been re-elected as Vice Chair and Catherine O’Connell, Head of Legal at Molex Japan, was elected as the second Vice Chair. Martin Spann, Branch Head and Head of Markets Tokyo at Commonwealth Bank of Australia, was elected Treasurer.

On to other news, I recently visited Kamaishi City and met with city officials to learn how Australian and New Zealand business might assist the city in its preparations for the opening of the new RWC stadium in 2019. While it is still early days, it was great to note that corporate entertainment areas will be included in the design. This opens channels of collaboration between Kamaishi and our members, particularly in the areas of language, hospitality and tourism training.

We have a number of exciting events coming up, please keep an eye on our website and social media to stay up to date on all event announcements. We have also recently joined the #Instragram community and I would like to encourage you to follow us @anzccj to see our event posts and photos!

A particularly fun event is the Gourmet Garden Party on 7 September. The event will have a slightly different theme this year as we will have a number of renowned Tokyo-based restaurants present as pop-up eateries in the Australian Embassy Garden. The aim of this event is to celebrate Australia and New Zealand’s world-class food and wine culture. We are looking forward to seeing many of you there to enjoy the fantastic meals our restaurants have to offer. Be sure to have a go at our Gourmet Master Trivia Game to enter the draw to win two tickets to the Garden Party. A big thank you also goes to Qantas Airways who will be  giving away a return Premium Economy Class Ticket to Sydney to one lucky winner on the night!

Finally, I would like to thank you all for your continued support of the Chamber.

Australia-Japan Business Cooperation Committee update: The 54th Annual Australia-Japan Joint Business Conference

9 Oct - 11 Oct 2016 |  Melbourne

Whilst the enactment of JAEPA in 2015 has signalled new business opportunities in the Australia-Japan relationship, there is widespread business understanding that the overall global economic environment and technology advances are subjecting core sectors to challenges which have not been witnessed before.

Plunging resources and energy prices, concerns about China’s economic transition, the impact of disruptive technologies on mature products and business process services, environmental issues and continuing excessive global liquidity make for a difficult path to be navigated. How are these challenges being met in the Australia-Japan context and what new ideas can we see emerging to mitigate such issues? New Challenges – New Ideas provides a forum for discussion by senior Australian and Japanese executives.
