ANZCCJ invites members and friends to join us in celebrating International Women's Day at a special breakfast event on Friday 6 March 2026 at the Pullman Tokyo Tamachi.
Join Rionne McAvoy, President & CEO, Japan Media Services Inc., and director of The Ones Left Behind: The Plight of Single Mothers in Japan, for a fireside chat with Mayumi Nishida, Co-representative Director of Heart Full Family - a charity dedicated to supporting single mothers and fathers on their path to independence and empowering single-parent families to lead fulfilling, connected lives.
Together, our speakers will explore the 2026 International Women’s Day global theme, “Give to Gain.” This theme - rooted in the idea that progress accelerates when we uplift others - encourages individuals, businesses, and communities to take meaningful action that strengthens the collective good. The IWD movement highlights that generosity is not passive; it is a deliberate investment in advancing women’s equality.
This year, ANZCCJ has chosen to focus on single mothers and the realities of single-parent households in Japan, an issue that lies at the crossroads of gender, inequality, economic participation, and social inclusion. Rionne’s award-winning documentary The Ones Left Behind offers an unflinching look at the challenges many single mothers endure: systemic barriers, societal stigma, limited support structures, and the increasing number of women who fall into poverty despite working tirelessly. Through powerful personal stories, the film reveals how structural inequities and rigid employment norms continue to constrain opportunities for women raising children alone.
These experiences reflect core IWD principles - dignity, opportunity, representation - and underscore the urgent need to create a society where no woman is left behind because of her circumstances. By spotlighting this issue, the Chamber aims to promote awareness of an often-overlooked social and economic challenge - one that is deeply connected to Japan’s future workforce health, productivity, and community resilience. It is also an opportunity for our members to reflect on how each of us can “give” in ways that enable others, and our society as a whole, to “gain.”
The conversation will explore practical ways individuals and organisations can meaningfully #GiveToGain - through mentorship, sharing expertise, opening networks, offering resources, advocating for change, and creating opportunities - and how these commitments build long-term, sustainable impact for women, families, and society as a whole.

Impact and Influence of Global ESG Policy on Australian and New Zealand Farmers.
The ANZCCJ Food Agriculture and Hospitality Committee invites members and friends to join us for a presentation by and discussion with distinguished 2024 Nuffield Scholar, Catherine Marriott.
Catherine has conducted an insightful research project on the influence of Global ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) policy on Australian farmers. Her report delves into the challenges and opportunities that ESG policies present to the agricultural sector in Australia. Catherine`s research took her to Europe, Asia (including Japan and Korea) and the USA where she spoke to industry leaders and governments. While the report was focused on Australia the impacts will be similar on farmers in New Zealand.
Key Highlights of the Report:
- Increased Awareness and Adoption: Catherine's research highlights the growing awareness among Australian farmers about the importance of ESG policies and the steps they are taking to adopt sustainable practices.
- Challenges in Implementation: The report identifies significant challenges in implementing ESG policies, including financial constraints, resource limitations, and the need for more education and support.
- Positive Impact on Market Access: Farmers who have embraced ESG policies have experienced improved market access, as consumers and businesses increasingly prioritize products that meet ESG standards.
- Need for Policy Support: Catherine emphasizes the necessity for stronger policy support from the government to aid farmers in transitioning to sustainable practices, including financial incentives and educational programs.
- Collaboration and Knowledge Sharing: The report underscores the importance of collaboration between farmers, industry stakeholders, and policymakers to share knowledge and best practices for overcoming ESG implementation challenges.
Catherine is a great storyteller, and her presentation promises to be as entertaining as it is insightful. Guest are welcome to ask questions throughout and share their experiences on ESG’s with the group.

Over the past decade, a wave of major transport investment has defined Australia's infrastructure sector, supported by robust state finances, economic rationalism, and federal backing.
While ongoing investment in transport and social infrastructure remains integral to the Australian economy, today the pipeline for infrastructure looks substantially different, providing a new set of opportunities.
The expansion of cloud computing and AI is expected to drive substantial demand for data centers in the next decade. Simultaneously, the geopolitical landscape is prompting increased investments in defense and security. Additionally, the urgent need for decarbonization is set to propel growth in the energy transition sector.
As Australia and Japan draw closer and closer, join us to discuss how our two nations can collaborate to harness these emerging opportunities and shape the next decade of infrastructure development.
